Yoga Block and the Asanas

Perhaps you never thought a prop could be used for yoga. Well, here it is. Yoga bricks are the widely known props that offer support beginners who are learning different asanas. It's true that certain postures are more challenging than others. Some of these asanas require that the performer stands on one foot. Yoga blocks can help you maintain balance while you work on your stance.

With these blocks, you can get support to stretch and align your body without losing balance. For different poses, these props can be strategically placed under your arms, feet or can even be used as a seat. These props are of special importance if you have to deal with virasana or ardha chandrasana. What happens is that in attaining some difficult postures, it gets difficult to stretch because we are afraid of losing balance.

With yoga block, the performer has the freedom to stretch the spine and adopt a proper breathing pattern while doing so.

Benefits of yoga blocks

Besides letting you execute your asanas properly, yoga blocks have various other benefits for the performer. Here what you need to know about these props if you are a beginner at yoga:

  • You can modify the pose according to your stretching abilities
  • You will have better support and alignment for the spine
  • Your muscles will experience less strain while you attempt to take a difficult pose
  • You can lean on to one pose for more time
  • The risk of injuries is minimized
Yoga blocks not only help a beginner but they are also ideal for a pregnant woman. They need to exercise close to delivery without expending more energy.

Yoga block material

What we are looking for is a user-friendly material and you can have a pick from bamboo, cork or wood. Some people prefer foam over other material. An ideal size for the block is 9 by 6 rectangle and the height can go up to 4 inches.  Though rectangle is a prominent shape but that is not the only shape in which these blocks are available. You can also find them in circular and square for head and neck support.
